The Girls' Tournament
took place on Friday 15th May 2026 at Ribbon Academy,
Murton.
Entrants
- Ribbon, Ryhope,
St Mary Magdalen's and Westlea
The four schools who entered the competition
provided the crowd with a thrilling spectacle, and
the high standard of football on display reflected the
much-deserved higher profile that girls' and women's
football is currently enjoying. Ribbon started very
strongly, scoring some cracking goals in a convincing win
against Ryhope, before Westlea won a tight match against St
Mary's. Ribbon and Westlea then played in a competitive
match-up, which provided lots of excitement but both keepers
were in fine form and and the fixture finished goalless. The
next game between Ryhope and St Mary's was another close
affair, decided by an excellent single goal from the St Mary's
striker. St Mary's did well to survive a brilliant Ryhope free
kick with a pass that Manchester City's Phil Foden would have
been proud of. Westlea then showed their class with a thumping
victory over Ryhope, scoring some brilliant goals along the
way. The final game of the tournament was a much closer match
with Ribbon just pipping St Mary's with a superb winning goal.
That result meant that Ribbon and Westlea both finished the
competition with 7 points with third-place St Mary Magdalen's
ending with 3 points. Ribbon and Westlea had identical playing
records so it was decided that the trophy would be shared
between the two teams. Well done to Ribbon and Westlea, and
well played also to the girls from St Mary's and
Ryhope. As usual, the tournament was played in wonderful
spirit and provided great entertainment for the
spectators.

Girls' Tournament Rules
i) Ten players per squad (limited to Y5 and Y6),
seven of whom form the
team and the other three are
subs.
ii)
Games are 4 minutes each way (unless agreed
otherwise before the
tournament).
iii)
The playing rules are the same as for
mini-soccer.
iv) If sufficient numbers warrant a dual
league system, teams are drawn to play
in two leagues and each league team plays
each other once. The
winners of group one play the winners of group
two in the final. If the final is drawn, extra time of two
minutes each way will be played. If there is still no winner
after extra time, the trophy will be shared unless both
finalists agree to take part in a penalty shoot-out, which
would involve 5 players from each team.
v) Teams are awarded three points for a
win and one for a
draw.
vi) Should
teams have the same number of points the highest placed team
shall be
decided as follows: a) Goal difference; b) Most goals scored; c)
Won most matches; d) Result(s) of matches between the teams concerned.
Should teams share a qualifying position in the group and
the playing records are identical, then a 'golden goal'
play-off match may be arranged if time permits. If this is impossible
or the play-off match is goalless, the position
will be decided by a penalty shoot-out involving 5 players
from each team.
