The 7 a-side Tournament took place on Thursday 18th September at Ribbon Academy, Murton.

Entrants: Ribbon, Ropery Walk, St Cuthbert's, Seaham Trinity and St Mary Magdalen's

On a windy but (thankfully) dry autumn evening, five teams played in a round-robin tournament. It soon became clear that St Cuthbert's and St Mary Magdalen's were going to be the teams to beat with both sides earning excellent early victories. The teams from Seaham Trinity, Ribbon and Ropery Walk all played some enterprising and entertaining football but St Cuthbert's and St Mary's were in such sparkling form that they carried all before them. It was fitting that the last game of the tournament was a match-up between those two sides. As things stood, both schools had identical perfect playing records - it couldn't have been closer. The match was a really tight affair, with both defences in no mood to give anything away. In the dying seconds, with a penalty shoot-out looking a certainty, St Mary's broke away and scored a fine goal. The final whistle followed almost immediately, so St Mary's had won the game and thereby lifted the 7 a-side Tournament Trophy. Congratulations to St Mary Magdalen's and commiserations to St Cuthbert's, who finished as worthy runners-up.

7 a-side Rules

i) Ten players per squad (limited to Y5 and Y6), seven of whom form the team and the other three are subs.

ii) Games are 4 minutes each way (unless agreed otherwise before the tournament).

iii) The playing rules are the same as for mini-soccer with one possible exception - in circumstances where pitches have been cut short in order to accommodate two pitches instead of one. If that is the case, owing to the short length of the pitch, after holding the ball, goalkeepers must return the ball into play by throwing it. In all other circumstances, the normal rules of mini-soccer apply.

iv) If sufficient numbers warrant a dual league system, teams are drawn to play in two leagues and each league team plays each other once. The winners of Group One  play the winners of Group Two in the final, which will be 4 minutes each way. If the final is drawn, extra time of two minutes each way will be played. If there is still no winner after extra time, a penalty shoot-out will take place involving 5 players from each team.

v) Teams are awarded three points for a win and one for a draw.

vi) Should teams have the same number of points the highest placed team shall be decided as follows: a) Goal difference; b) Most goals scored; c) Won most matches; d) Result(s) of matches between the teams concerned. Should teams share a qualifying position in the group and the playing records are identical, then a 'golden goal' play-off match may be arranged if time permits. If this is impossible, the position will be decided by penalty kicks.
